Indian Independence Day at India Cultural and Spiritual Center Chantilly, Va – Highlights Women’s Expo and Kavi Sammelan

Date:

The India Cultural and Spiritual Center marked this year’s Indian Independence Day celebrations not only with patriotic fervor but also through an outstanding union of voices and visions. Amidst the patriotic fervor and the echoes of “Sare Jahan se Acha Hindostan Hamara”, two events stood out: a Women’s Expo showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit of the Subcontinent and a Kavi Sammelan that brought together poets whose words bridged continents and generations.

What unfolded was more than a celebration of India’s freedom; it was a global dialogue about identity, aspiration, and empowerment.

The Women’s Expo was a shining testament to the force of female entrepreneurship. From Financial Experts and wellness experts to artisans and small business founders, Indian-American women of Indian origin came forward with an inspiring confidence that highlighted their resilience and ingenuity. Each booth was more than a display of products; it was a statement of self-reliance and creativity. In a world recovering from pandemic disruption and navigating economic uncertainty, these women demonstrated that entrepreneurship is not just an engine of opportunity but also a platform for cultural preservation and global integration.

Leading the way was TitanProz LLC, a Virginia-based management consulting firm founded by President and CEO Anita Dehkan. TitanProz LLC helps small and mid-sized businesses grow through strategy, innovation, and efficiency, offering services such as business assessments, strategic planning, process automation, and AI-driven solutions to streamline operations.

Diaspora creativity was equally visible in small businesses that bring culture into everyday life. Padma Priya’s MildspicyCreations and DSquareGiftShop captivated attention with their personalized and designed phone cases, custom mugs, thoughtful drinkware, custom festival printables, framed TV artworks, and practical lifestyle pieces, including scrunchies, jute bags, and eco-friendly totes. They also offer personalized t-shirts that merge creativity with gifting traditions, reminding attendees that enterprise can be as personal as it is global. Also joining the lineup was WeavesTalk. Founded by Smita Jain, this woman-owned business is dedicated to preserving and sharing Indian heritage through pure handloom sarees. Their collection features exquisite, handcrafted sarees like Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Gadwal, Ikkat, Jamdani, Kantha, Madhubani, Batik, Ajrakh, Tussar, and more, alongside pre-stitched blouses, Jaipuri block print suits, kurtis, jackets, and hand-embroidered dupattas, showcasing the artistry and cultural significance of traditional weaving.

A notable presence at the Expo was Shree Vedic Wellness, a wellness center dedicated to promoting holistic health across all age groups. Through a mix of online and in-person sessions, the center, led by Sreejana Uprety, helps women, men, teens, and children address issues ranging from menopause and heart health to hormone balance, stress, focus, mental health, and lifestyle management. By integrating personalized diet plans, yoga, Zumba, meditation, and herbal recommendations, Shree Vedic Wellness brought a vital reminder to the event: true independence also rests on personal health and well-being.

Speaking of well-being, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), led by Barbara Moseley-Marks, highlighted the vital role of peacekeeping in empowering communities. UPF is a global interfaith organization dedicated to advancing world peace. UPF supports interfaith dialogue, peace education, and family strengthening initiatives aligned with the United Nations’ goals. Through partnerships and community programs, UPF fosters cooperation and sustainable peace worldwide.

Completing the entrepreneurial showcase was Simplified Financials, led by Shubhra Srivastava, a team of experts in defensive financial planning and wealth management. Their work highlights the importance of long-term security and preparedness within the diaspora. You can learn more about them by attending an upcoming webinar on wills and trusts scheduled for August 28. (https://tinyurl.com/simplifiedfinancials) Their presence served as a reminder that independence is also about future readiness for families, businesses, and future generations.

Running alongside this showcase of enterprise was the Kavi Sammelan, a celebration of India’s most cherished cultural tradition – “Poetry”. The poets, representing both India and the Indian diaspora, reimagined freedom not only as a historical triumph but also as an ongoing responsibility. Their poems explored themes of migration, belonging, and the shared bonds between Bharat and its global communities. For audiences in the U.S., this was a reminder that cultural expression transcends geography; poetry remains a bridge between roots and dreams.

The Kavi Sammelan added rich cultural gravitas to the Independence Day celebrations. The event brought together an impressive lineup of poets whose works and backgrounds reflect the depth and diversity of the diaspora’s literary tradition. Among them were:

  • Anurag Sharma is a poet and editor of Setu magazine, a respected literary publication.
  • Harish Naval, an award-winning poet, satirist, and a recipient of 12 National Level Literary Prizes, including Yuva Jnanpeeth Puraskar;
  • Dr. Abdullah is the co-founder of the Aligarh Alumni Association, a prominent cultural organization.
  • Dhananjay Kumar, an acclaimed poet, educator, yogacharya, and award-winning film writer, is known for his contributions to modern Hindi literature.
  • Shashi Padha is an esteemed author and poet with multiple published works.
  • Madhu Maheshwari is an experienced Hindi teacher and active contributor to literary forums.
  • Astha Naval, A PhD holder in Hindi literature, is an accomplished author and a young poetess with several published books and contributions to numerous literary journals.

The program continued with Uday Kamath, a poet and music expert renowned for Urdu Nazms and Ghazals; Snehsudha Naval, a retired Hindi Professor and a recognized poet active in cultural and literary events; and Manish Dubey, an IT Professional and an emerging voice in contemporary poetry circles. Bhuvanpati Sharma is noted for lyrical and impactful poetry, while Nilima Ravi actively participates in diaspora cultural activities. The evening also showcased Vinita Tiwari, a poet, educator, and dancer renowned for her emotive and evocative verse, and Vishakha Thakur, a scientist, writer, and passionate poet who blends science and art in her work in the DC region.

Through their verses, these poets reinvigorated the ideals of freedom, exploring themes of migration, belonging, and identity, while reaffirming poetry’s unique ability to bridge roots and diaspora communities across the globe.

Viewed through a global lens, the day’s celebrations offered a meaningful takeaway: India’s Independence is not simply an Indian story. It is a human story. It is about the courage to claim one’s identity, the determination to innovate, and the imagination to envision a more inclusive future. In the U.S., where diversity is both a challenge and a strength, such events highlight how diaspora communities enrich the civic and cultural fabric of their adopted homeland while upholding connections with their heritage.
